The Associated Press reports six Honolulu based naval fliers aboard a patrol seaplane were killed during fleet maneuvers near the Mid-Pacific. The crash followed a rescue operation for a sister plane forced to land in heavy seas.
The Alaska Mine Workers Union directs a walkout at the Alaska Juneau mine effective tonight. Union demands include a forty eight hour week a daily wage increase of 1.15 dollars, closed shop and collective bargaining. Eight hundred workers would be affected.

The Senate prepares to take up the Patman bonus issue after the House overrode Roosevelt’s veto 322 to 98. Debate time limits apply as administration hopes a narrow majority can sustain the veto in the Senate. The plan under discussion would let veterans convert certificates into three percent bonds or take cash surrender value.
The Senate refused to pass the Patman bill by 54 to 40, blocking the veto measures as both chambers prepare new action. A House bill to fund the bonus with public works money is introduced, while bonus supporters plan a Senate rider on naval appropriations. President Washington met with the allotment board during the vote but did not comment.
Pacific Coast foreign trade surpassed 100 million dollars this year and shows about a 15 percent increase over last year. Nome rebuilding is mentioned in a brief note within the item.
Grant Jackson of Nome flies to Seattle on the first southbound Pacific Alaska Airways leg and plans to return on the Victoria. Herbert J. Murchison and Henry V. Benson from Metlakatla attend the National Rivers and Harbors congress in Washington and receive an endorsement for the Metlakatla harbor project. Berlin May 28 The German government issues a law forcing all Germans aged eighteen to forty to serve one year in the army effective immediately. Those over forty five form reserves. Jews appear barred from service except in special cases. Young men not called until twenty one. The decree follows Hitler's Reichstag remarks on Versailles limits and defense needs.
The U S Coast Guard cutter Northland at Dutch Harbor received telegrams confirming ice conditions in Norton Sound near Nome. Airplane pilots reported no ice from St Michael to Nome with open water west of Nome and around King Island and St Lawrence Island.
In New York on May 23 leaders of the steel industry denounced closed shop and labor union activity and objected to the Wagner bill during their annual meeting at the iron and steel visit.
Eugene G. Grace, president of the Institute, urged workers to stand squarely for an open shop and characterized the Wagner bill as vicious in his keynote address.
In Forest Grove Oregon a crowd of about 400 striking lumber workers gathered to halt operations at the Stimson sawmill. Special deputies armed with riot gear guarded the site as two men were reported beaten including Deputy Sheriff C. V. McMonacle and a Portland photographer. Ernst Schmidt, a mill worker, was dragged from a car and beaten.
