London reports say Russian and British forces meet lower Mesopotamia, prompting Germany to rush 4000 seasoned troops and large war materiel to reinforce the Turkish defense of Bagdad. Austrian troops, about 12000, are said to be already at Bagdad aiding the Turks against the Russo British offensive.
A. P. A Service in Honolulu reports Manua Loa on the island of Hawaii in a partial eruption. Large lava flows descend the crater slopes in the path of 1887. Seismic disturbances are noted but mild. Hundreds of tourists and residents head toward the mountain to view the volcanic activity.
From Portland May 22 returns show Hughes ahead of Cummins and Burton combined in the presidential preference primaries. Roosevelt and Wilson ran unopposed. In Cincinnati Geo B. Cox, famed local political boss, is reported dead at his home.
General Funston asked the war department to deploy all available troops including the entire coast artillery for border duty. The move follows delays and reluctance from border state national guards to serve and concerns over physical readiness. Baker is handling forwarding to the coast artillery for advisement.

Washington May 23 The main amendment to the Porto Rico bill granting suffrage rights to women was adopted by the house committee. Vote stood eighty to thirty seven.
James Larkin leaped from the platform during a Chicago speech attacking an auditor, Thomas Newnan, who resented his critique of England. The confrontation ended with Newnan forcibly ejected as Larkin claimed Angela Spring-Rice’s sister aided smuggling rifles into Ireland ahead of the rebellion.
