Commencement Exercises At U Alaska Today

The 14th annual commencement at the University of Alaska is held in Fairbanks in a new gymnasium. Seventeen graduates, including two Nome youths Joseph Walsh and Aben Shallit, receive diplomas. Dr. Gruening delivers the address and banquet speech. Governor Troy and other officials attend.

Missing Hunter Council Section Failed Search

Pilot Hermann of NAT tried an aerial search for a missing Eskimo hunter who left Council three days ago after wounded a reindeer and arming himself with a butcher knife. Nome was asked to send a plane for a possible air search. no trace yet found and the hunter’s whereabouts remain unknown.

Hindenburg Heads Toward New York City in Rainstorm

The German airship Hindenburg, battered by a heavy rain storm and a forty five mile head wind, sped over the North Atlantic toward America. It is expected to reach New York City around noon Tuesday.

The State Department renewed warnings about Japanese armed expansion in China. Reports from Moscow said a Soviet patrol was fired upon by the Japanese, signaling a new eastern border incident.

Guffy Coal Act Knocked Out By Supreme Court

The Supreme Court upheld a six to three ruling voiding the Guffey Coal Act as unconstitutional and an invasion of states powers. Justices Brandeis Stone and Cardozo dissented. The court did not rule on the price fixing provision and questioned the excise tax of fifteen percent of soft coal production as a penalty rather than a true tax.

Court of Appeals Rules Out Big Money Measure

The District of Columbia Court of Appeals ruled the 1935 Relief Act unconstitutional in a sweeping opinion by three of five judges. It voided a four billion eight hundred eighty million law for improper delegation to the President, invasion of state rights, and lack of authorization. Justice Orsdel wrote the opinion.

Nome Chamber Plans Formal Visit To Dr Gruening

The Nome Daily Nugget reports Dr. Gruening of the Interior Department plans a visit to Nome Wednesday. The Northwestern Alaska Chamber of Commerce considers a luncheon in his honor to discuss Territory affairs and the Seward Peninsula region. Proposals include speeding up the Nome Federal Building project and advancing Alaska’s regular saviors service toward approval. The Maynard Columbus Hospital funding and possible transfer to the Office of Indian Affairs to serve whites and natives are raised for discussion. Jensen indicates he will be in Washington, D. C., on return.
