International News Service reports the Italian campaign opening with rapid gains along the Isonzo river and the capture of the east bastion of Plava. Thousands of prisoners and many guns taken as Italian forces advance toward Carniola. in Vienna it is admitted Austrians retreated on the Tonzo river with over two thousand prisoners.
Washington May 18 The administration and Congress are at a breaking point after a closed Senate session. Critics accuse Wilson and his cabinet of secrecy and withholding loan details and war strategy from lawmakers. The defense board faces flak for withholding information, while calls grow for full explanatory dates and accountability.
International News Service reports a German submarine torpedoed the American steamer Hilonian in the Ligurian Sea near Genoa while unarmed. Italian destroyers overhauled the submarine, which surfaced near a destroyer and exploded, sinking with all hands. four Hilonian crew members died after lacking time to abandon ship. Survivors were rescued at Genoa.
Boston May 18 Rep Sherburne of Brookline charged that districts attorney seized cases containing sixty rifles consigned to enemy aliens. He said the cases were marked glass to deceive authorities and called for an immediate investigation and explanation. Also notes a dance at Eagle Hall after May Day and Nugget subscription ad for Nome.
Pacific News Service reports General Zapata was killed last night near Tuxtla in Guerrero during a confrontation. Once a leading revolutionary faction head, Zapata's power waned after Diaz's return split his forces, diminishing his ability to challenge Villa and Carranza.

Washington May 18 8 The selective conscription bill passed both houses and was signed by Vice President Marshall and Speaker Clark this afternoon. The president is expected to sign the proclamation establishing general registration for men ages twenty one to thirty. War Department estimates say ten million men eligible, two million to be selected for immediate training. Cantonment camps in Ayer Massachusetts El Paso Texas American Lake Washington Atlanta Georgia Augusta Maine will train the national army. thousands of regulars will instruct the raw materials. Registration date expected to be announced tonight across the United States. Honduras wires claim severing relations with Germany and offering fifty thousand troops to join the United States in war.
A company of six guardsmen on a route march in Mittsburg Ta were poisoned during a lunch break. Ten guardsmen were hospitalized with poison in the food and Lieutenant William Corcoran of Philadelphia died after autopsy. Local cafe owners of Austrian nationality were arrested and placed under military guard as authorities investigate the tainted meal and analyze the remaining foodstuffs.
The Hague May 18 Advices from Germany say Kaiser Wilhelm II and General field marshal von Hindenburg refused Bethmann Hollweg permission to speak on peace terms in the Reichstag next week The chancellor’s proposition to discuss the subject was denied by direct order from the emperor and von Hindenburg No peace terms will be proposed until a more favorable time The military leaders expect a final German push against Franco British forces within two weeks and then consider peace terms
