Alaska mail bidder to be allowed to start service

Washington May 18 The Alaska man Byers who was the sole bidder on the Alaska aerial mail proposals will be given a chance to make good on his bid to establish an air mail route from Seward to the Iditarod region. Postmaster General Burleson ordered bond sufficiency verification and asked Iditarod to confirm readiness and equipment, delaying action until requirements are met. Paris May 18 An A P service announces Major General J B Marchand of Fashoda fame died on the battle front Eighteen years earlier he commanded French forces in the Sudan and clashed with British forces led by Kitchener at Fashoda before withdrawing The report notes his death occurred during a recent engagement

Vienna Protests Sinking of Austrian Liner

Berlin reports that eleven people including three women died when the Austrian passenger liner Dubronick was sunk by an allied submarine. Vienna protests the attack as endangering noncombatants and asserts Italy and Germany had agreed to avoid such warfare. Langhorne Forces Capture Seventy Five Bandits

An official report from Major Langhorne to General Funston states units engaged a large band of Mexican raiders in a running fight near the Texas border. Six were killed and seventy five captured, with pursuit continuing to haze the remnants. Captured men will be turned over to Carranza officials.

Col Sibley Rescues Captured Americans

San Antonio May 18 Word reached Funston today that Col Sibley and his cavalry expedition into Mexico pursuing the Glenn Springs raiders have freed two Americans held by the raiders. The rescued men are J Deemer Glenn Springs storekeeper and Monroe Payne a cook and employee. Details of the release are not provided.
