Reports from El Paso say Mexican bandits near the Arizona border and Rio Grande valley threaten settlers, raid ranches, and drive off cattle. Mexican incursions prompt deployment of twelve cavalry and infantry companies from Nogales to secure isolated border points.
Earl L. Byers of Iditarod is the sole bidder for an Alaska air mail route Seward to Iditarod 380 miles twice weekly. The Post Office Department notes larger manufacturers cannot meet war orders and may issue a new call for bids when capable. Byers lacks a bond but may receive time to comply with bond requirements aided by local bank and citizens guarantees.
The House and Senate conferees approved a regular army of two hundred six thousand, with potential to rise to two hundred fifty four thousand during war. The conference report will go to both chambers for ratification next week.
Boise City and nearby communities were jolted by a 7:30 PM quake with repeated tremors. No fatalities but several had narrow escapes. many dishes broke and chimneys toppled. Reports from Weiser say gas from a major well surged and caught fire, blazing high and visible across the area.
