Washington May 1 an appropriation bill moved from the naval committee to the senate provides four and one half million dollars this year for eight submarines three of which are already under construction at the fleet yard. The measure aims to accelerate submarine production and strengthen naval capabilities.
The Corwin sails for Nome at midnight with a full cargo and one hundred cabin passengers. The ship, chartered by the Sesquip, is commanded by Captain Healey and travels the inside passage with few stops, aiming for an early Nome arrival for northern work.

Nugget's Special Service Washington May 13 It has been announced that Harry Bishop of Juneau has received the nomination by the president for United States marshal for the first district of Alaska. Bishop's name has been sent to the senate and his confirmation will be made in a few days. He is well known in Juneau and throughout the district. He was at one time mayor of Juneau a successful business man and governor Strong's choice among others for the post. If confirmed he will succeed Marshal Faulkner who has served the district for several years and is an efficient officer.
O Shaughnessy met with the president in Washington on May 13 to discuss Mexico. He said any US backed government would gain support from educated Mexicans who seek a solution as the situation worsens. He denied Huerta rumors, warned of a serious City of Mexico situation, and feared for embassy safety.
