Explosion occurred as hoses failed and the hull was punctured.
Victor Carlstrom and Carry Eppes were killed when their aircraft plunged a thousand feet. Carlstrom, famed aviator and instructor at the local school, and Eppes, a promising student, perished as the craft exploded before onlookers. The cause of the crash remains unknown.
May 10 dispatches report a violent German assault on British lines from Arras to Lens. The British held the position after hours of heavy fighting, inflicting severe losses. About a thousand Germans were captured along with numerous machine guns, with casualties high on both sides and further fighting anticipated.
In Detroit foreign commissioners in town arranged large oilers for armored vehicles now used at the front. General Motors won the contract for motor trucks and tanks, while other plants would build armored motor cars. Orders run into millions with a November first delivery target. Government work will not be delayed. Inspectors say Detroit plants can churn out thousands of trucks or cars on short notice and orders will be placed soon.
