Aboard the battleship Pennsylvania on May 8 two naval airmen died when a plane crashed and sank during Pacific maneuvers off Hawaii. Lieutenant Commander John Frances Gillon piloted the craft and radioman Glenn Beal served as radio operator.
Reported fighting restarted in Barcelona as anarchists clash with Catalonian forces. Civil conflict spreads to suburbs paralyzing business and transport. Four hundred killed and thousands wounded during Tuesday and Wednesday violence.
Seattle May 6 The steam ship General Gorgas sailed yesterday for Ekuk marking the start of the annual cannery movement to Bristol Bay Alaska The Otsego sails Saturday and the David Branch May 15 The three ships will carry over thirteen hundred cannery workers and twelve thousand five hundred tons of supplies.
The Associated Press reports National League results with Pittsburgh defeating Philadelphia 8 to 3. Cincinnati beat Boston 5 to 3. St Louis won 2 to 1 over New York. Chicago topped Brooklyn 12 to 1. St Louis added another win 9 to 1 over Sacramento. American League games include Washington 2 Detroit 4 and Boston 5 Chicago 3. New York 6 Cleveland 7 and Philadelphia 6. Oakland 5-0, San Diego 2 San Francisco 10. Missions 7-5. Los Angeles 3-6. Seattle-Portland game rainout.
In today’s National League action Chicago defeated Brooklyn 6 to 5 while St Louis beat New York 12 to 5. New York beat Cleveland 4 to 3 and Boston defeated Chicago 6 to 5. Postponed games included Cincinnati at Boston and Pittsburgh at Philadelphia due to rain. In Corvallis Washington defeated Oregon State 11 to 2 on May 8.
The Navy Department convenes the Court of Inquiry into the Hindenburg disaster as Monday hearings begin. Captain Ernst Lehmann died, bringing the death toll to 35 and German victims will be returned home. The inquiry is led by Captain Gordon Haynes with hearings arranged by the Commerce Department.
