The Territorial Liquor Board tightened rules on intoxicating liquors in Juneau on May 3. Anyone under 21 is restricted, and licenses now require half the voting population’s support for unincorporated towns. Licenses will be issued for six months ending December 31 to align with a calendar year.
The Interior Department appropriation bill for the fiscal year ending June 30 1937 was reported out of conference. Alaska items were adjusted with a $60 000 to $70 000 change for the Geological Survey and a $25 000 addition for native relief. Two Senate amendments extend natives education and medical relief funds to 1938. A predatory animal trapper will be sent to Alaska to aid Eskimos against wolves.
Undated report describes rebels and native marauders harassing Addis Ababa while Italian forces close in from the northeast. Emperor Haile Selassie flees toward Haifa as foreign nationals seek safety. American envoy Engert reports legation defense and casualties.
Governor John W. Troy announces the resignation of W B Kirk from the Board of Trustees of the Pioneers Home at Sitka and names H R Vanderbeest of Juneau as his successor. Kirk’s absence from the Territory for most of the year was given as the reason for the resignation.
District Attorney Baren Fitts said Robert James a barber and Charles Hope an ex sailor and cafe worker accused each other of the bathtub drowning of James wife Mary Busch James at their La Crescenda home last August 4. Each admitted complicity but blamed the other saying the motive was to obtain money from the widow's policy.
Baron Frary von Blomberg, a 26 year old Irish American adopted by Baroness Adelheid von Blomberg, says his plan to revive World Fellowship of Faiths in Germany may be postponed in favor of a summer trip to Alaska. He serves as New England secretary for the World Fellowship of Faiths, an organization promoting peace and unity amid the Nazi regime. He notes uncertainty in Germany and mentions possible communications with General Werner von Blomberg.
The Associated Press reports Pacific Alaska Airways restarted its schedule on Sunday with flights linking Juneau and Fairbanks to Whitehorse and Flat. The restart marks the return of regular service across the Alaska to Yukon routes.
