Five persons die in a four story apartment house fire in Poughkeepsie New York. Police say three young boys playing near the stairway started the blaze. Victims include Herbert Seifts, wife, two children and Shirley Elmore age seven.
Washington reports on May 4 that Congress seems poised to veto the bonus measure as Vinson or Patman bills near passage. Administration leaders concede the Harrison bill is lost and anticipate a veto on the chosen bonus proposal. Relief wages may rise over fifty dollars monthly due to higher food prices, officials said.
Chehalis May 4 Evelyn Clark aged 48 shot and killed E. J. Nixon a businessman and first degree murder suspect. She suicided this morning taking poison after a night of collapse. She told the jailer's wife she took the poison before arrest in the woods where Nixon was shot. She leaves a husband and two daughters.

The National Rivers and Harbors Committees in Washington endorsed about 900 million dollars in projects. FAIRBANKS May 4 Frank Dorbandt a well known Alaska flyer died this morning of pneumonia. He helped in the Ben Eielson search in 1929 and later organized Pacific International Airways. He flew for Bowman Air Lines of Anchorage and had recent involvement in fur evasion violations with the U S government.
Six marine unions involved in the Pacific Coast oil tanker strike wired the administration on May 4 asking for the appointment of a presidential arbitration board to avert a possible general coastwise shipping walkout.

Joe Mullins returning to Nome reports no sign of John Land who was missing for six weeks. He says false reports circulated and that Peter Lee and Paul Rasmusar seen near Shelton cried cabins before moving on. Mullins notes April travelers crossed the area with no trace of Land and locals suspect he froze to death buried under snow. Travelers continue to search for the missing man.
Seattle May 4 A spreading wave of advance walkouts by Pacific Northwest lumber workers grew to about five thousand across Washington and Oregon in the three days before the threatened general strike. Unions said the action was not yet officially authorized.
Washington May 4 The Projects committee continued work on rivers and harbors projects and announced that the Peters burg harbor was added to the meritorious list.
Rumor says Frank Martin and Joe Amarok, recently returned from a reputed gold stampede northwest of Wiseman, plan to leave by plane tomorrow morning for northern gold prospects. Destination unspecified, suspected to be the upper Colville River area near Barrow.
