In Waliunton on May 4 the Wick ersham bill passed. It provides that federal officials in Alaska will collect the territorial license tax, shifting tax collections to United States commissioners in the various precincts.
Vera Cruz reports Kerr hands over civil governorship to Gene Funston granting him absolute control of the city. The transfer comes as Funston assumes responsibilities in the strategic port amid ongoing shifts in local authority and military oversight.
Jack Dalton, famed Alaskan discoverer of the Dalton trail, to lead field transportation for the Alaska railroad project. The commission plans to base operations at Seward with a party to scout from there along the Tanana and Susitna regions as work begins. Officials expect Daltons to travel to Seattle soon for further arrangements and to oversee field crews.
Washington May 6 The press reports President Taft selected Richard Olney of Boston as governor and Paul Warburg of New York as member of the reserve board. Rehard Viney, once attorney general and later secretary of state under Cleveland, is noted among the nominees. The announcement, seen as favorable to finance interests, is widely discussed. For patrons, the rear toilet in Eagle saloon will be open on Sundays.
The state department says mediators asked the United States to appoint a representative for talks with them. Similar requests were sent to Huerta and Carranza. Carranza refused the idea that constitutionalists pause hostilities to aid negotiations, raising fears of complications. The mediators seek an adjustment to establish peace in Mexico and preserve their mission.
