Paris dispatch reports heavy German night assaults in the Argonne with poison gas used as a main tactic. The German attacks were repulsed with heavy losses, while Verdun and Arras sectors saw artillery duels and aerial combat.
Premier Asquith introduces a bill to enroll all males of military age and physical condition in the forces. The move aims to settle the married men drafting dispute and respond to Irish unrest influencing the government.

No official encouragement yet, but the plan would likely appeal to the government as it shifts pressure away from further concessions to America amid German hostility.
Prime Minister Asquith told the House of Commons that four rebel leaders were shot for high treason while three others received three year prison terms. The executions included Patrick Pearse and James Connolly, commanders of the Provisional Government, with hearings held before a military tribunal. The fate of other prominent rebels was left for later decision.
Dublin May 2 Augustine Birrell chief secretary for Ireland says there is very little left of the uprising and reports show general quiet nationwide. Troops control disturbances and ringleaders nearly all under arrest with rebels offered or forced to turn king's evidence to escape punishment. Many leaders face immediate execution and hundreds of minor participants will be tried by military courts. Repair work begins on Dublin damage as martial law holds and troops patrol city and county.
German embassy officials say President Wilsons demands have been wholly acceded to by Berlin officials yet administration aides doubt such a swift reply. Ambassador Gerards reports give no definite knowledge of who will answer. All performers in the Grande Duchesse are to meet tonight at 7 30 for stage rehearsal.
The House rejected the administration bill on Philippine independence, backing the Jones bill that calls for eventual independence without a firm relinquishment date. The report also notes progress on reconciling army increase bills, with a proposed force of 180,000.
