New Orleans reports 115000 homeless as floods from the Mississippi peak, with government feeding and sheltering refugees in army style camps along river banks. General Wood oversees relief while President Taft promises ongoing aid and recovery support for affected states and communities.
The May 3 Boston report notes Theodore Roosevelt’s wired appeal to the Massachusetts Republican state committee. Disaster reports from Doliver County describe two hundred deaths after the levee breach flooded the area near Jackson Mississippi. Rescue crews recover bodies from tree tops and homes as waters recede and residents begin returning home.
Cable ship McNtz returned from the Titanic wreck area without locating any bodies near the site. Fifteen bodies were later picked up by another vessel as the search concluded and ships returned to port.
The senate this morning increased the river and harbors appropriation by eight million dollars, bringing the total to a little over thirty-two million for the coming fiscal year. The House had passed the bill previously, and the measure aims to fund river and harbor improvements nationwide.
