War department orders quadrupling force of tencrat cavalry in Colorado to take control of strike zones until peace is restored between strikers and mine operators. End of laundry ad urges readers to patronize Peoples Laundry for “good work” by white employees at standard wages.
President names Wm. C. Edes and Lt. Frederick Mears to Alaska engineering commission to locate and construct government railroads in Alaska. Edes, famed railroad locating engineer, led mountain line work in California and the Southwest. Mears, Panama Railroad chief engineer, recommended by Col. Gothals. Commission to start immediate route location from southwestern Alaska through Susitna valley to the Tanana river.
Admiral Monard reported a Federal official who believed war had been declared seized an American brig at a western port. The brig was released after the Raleigh’s commander demanded it. the Federal commander apologized. Also notes a children's fancy dances at Eagle Hall on May 9 with 7 cent admission.
May 2 Washington report notes Lt Mears and Edes agree to sail toward Seattle and Abislie within a week for field parties. Government reservations at Turnagan Arm Fire Island Campbell Possession Points hint Portage Bay as terminal site. Manila May 2 The Oceanic Niner Siberia arrived this morning with captain reporting a smooth voyage and no accidents he dismissed rumors the ship was aground. The item notes no ground for such a report and includes church notices for St Mary's Episcopal Church services.
Iditarod May 2 The town of Flat City awoke to a large lodging house fire that spread rapidly due to a strong east wind. Over twenty buildings were destroyed including the A B hall and several shops. One man was rescued from the Trome lodging house. no deaths reported. Losses run into thousands with little insurance. most of the western town suffered the blaze while the eastern business district was saved by wind direction. The community intends to rebuild.
Governor Ammonds telegraphed Secretary Garrison requesting additional federal troops for Northern Colorado as state militia prove insufficient amid growing trouble. Major Holbrook reported federal troops at Waldenberg led opposing sides to surrender, signaling possible end to the conflict. A mention notes a toilet opening at Eagle saloon on Sundays for patrons.
Special Nugget Service reports Mexico City May 2 as Foreign Minister Rojas and Assistant Ruiz resign after Huerta orders blocking commercial relations with the United States and rejects American vessels at Vera Cruz. Huerta halts international traffic and curtails external ties, with further cabinet resignations and policy-aligned changes anticipated.
San Diego May 2 two hundred sixty refugees arrived yesterday on the German steamship Maine. Many more are awaiting transport on the west coast and towns along the coast are crowded with Americans from the interior seeking to leave the country.
