Seattle May 1 Revenue cutters Manning and Tahoma sailed for Bering Sea to coal at Comax and continue to Alaska waters. Also notes May Day events and spring weather with forecast clear skies and light wind.
Washington reports say American refugees imprisoned in Mexico City faced execution. Secretary Bryan appealed to Spain’s ambassador and Huerta, seeking suspension during peace talks. Officials expect diplomatic pressure may halt sentences, though Huerta may pursue war if deposed. Bryan vows to use the State Department to save the Americans.
Washington May 1 Senator Joindexter asked the senate to adopt a resolution recognizing Dr. Cook as the discoverer of the pole. He asserted that it was Cook and not Weary who reached the pole and that the senate should give him the credit he has been unjustly deprived of.
Special Nugget Service reports Roosevelt cabled from Manaos that he has just returned from a trip to the north central portion of Brazil. He notes the journey was very successful yet difficult, detailing the arduous nature of the shrimp expedition.
Congress man Smith of Maryland introduced a resolution to cede the southeastern portion of Alaska to Canada. The plan claims the coastal strip would connect Western Canada to deep water and contains rich mining towns. The deal would require England to consent to revoking the Hay Pauncefote treaty to maintain peace.
Springstine and Beckston report they dug five hundred feet of beach at Hastings Creek and hope to secure pay in Roadway. The ground previously worked by others yielded the best paystreak, but the steriel hed miners may have exhausted it.

The Pacific Mail Steamship Siberia ran aground off Formosa with eighty cabin passengers including Governor General Harrison of the Philippines and wife aboard. A Japanese warship was sent to assist and salvage efforts were hoped for. one steward was killed. No cause given for firing on the steamer.
May 1 report says the Ward Line steamship Antilla flying the Cuban flag was fired upon by both federales and rebels at Veracruz near Tam- and no immediate casualty figures were released.
Consul Burundi of Vera Cruz reports about 1500 Americans remain in Mexico unable to depart due to interrupted rail travel. Americans inland are completely cut off from reaching the coast.
An official White House notice states the marriage of Secretary of the Treasury McAdoo and the President’s daughter will be held in the Blue Room at the White House on May 1. Dr E B Ward Pyan is expected to perform the ceremony.
