Russian forces push along the Dneister in lower Galicia forcing Austrians to abandon transport and capturing vessels. The advance widens northward as the campaign seeks to seize Galicia from Austria.
Oliver J. Cline, longtime cashier for the Pacific Coast Company and trusted employee, has disappeared with about ten thousand dollars of company funds. An audit shows extended, years long peculations. bonds will cover losses. The note appears in The Nom Daily Nugget.
A March blaze in Paris Texas left about eight thousand homeless as the town’s business section was wiped out and much of the residential area burned. The fire began in a restaurant, spread quickly aided by wind, and a failing water supply. Estimated damage reached three million dollars.
March 22 dispatches report near total Russian control of Persia and Armenia and Mesopotamia, with columns driving Turks back. Athens sources say Russian forces occupying Ispahan move southwest to junction with British units under Generals Aylmer and Townshend, narrowing eastern Turkish boundaries. Russians push west of Lake Van and near Arabkir beyond the Euphrates.
British Vice Consul Thomas O'Shea placed foreign women and children in a box car to escape the city amid the American invasion. The mass evacuees gathered for border departure, while foreigners fear unrest and possible uprising against Americans.
Generals announce from San Antonio that Villa may flee to the Sierra Madre as Carranza forces under Colonel Cano pursue. Reports say Villa was heavily beaten at Namiquipa with about nine hundred Carranza troops, leaving dead and wounded behind.
In Washington March 22 the War Department refused to announce how infantry regiments are being sent to the Mexican border. It is known that orders have been issued for several regiments to proceed into Mexico. Senator Sherman filed a resolution urging the president to call 50 000 volunteers for Mexico triggering rapid passage. The measure would use volunteers only for punitive actions and require their mustering out once Villa is captured or killed.
Paris reports heavy German bombardment of Malincourt with lighter artillery activity east of the Meuse. Simultaneously Petrograd says Russians defeated Germans along the Dvina between Dvinsk and Vilna in multiple engagements with Russians continuing gains.
London March 21 A royal order expands a war council ban on luxuries. The proclamation by George prohibits importing automobiles and motorcycles without special permits, and bans pianos phonographs spirits except brandy and rum.
A touring vaudeville company with eight members wrecked through a railing over the Spokane river. Injured: John Hindle Hugh B Pace Cassie Baldwin Anna Schafer Jake Schafer Madeline Lewis and three others. Hindle and Pace gravely hurt with limited survival chances. The touring car was reduced to fragments after the 50 yard fall.
Dispatches report two shots fired at Premier Radoslov while he rode a open carriage in Sofia, with no injuries. Amid regional turmoil, Turkish fronts shift near Trebizond as Russian troops mass in southern Poland and Villa forces seize Tampico oil areas as rioting rises in Tuxpam.
