Washington reports a Mexican crisis after the murder of John McManus a former Chicago resident in Mexico City. Zapatist troops reportedly entered the home of McManus despite an American flag flying above, provoking strong U.S. protests and rising tensions at the highest government levels.
March 12 New York Thaw testified in his own defense stating his escape from the Matteawan asylum came during a period of mental confusion and that he did not believe he was not of sound mind at the time. He maintained he was sane when incarcerated and asked for a ballot decision on the liquor question. His wife Eve Nesbit reportedly reconciled with him.
Front reports from March 12 describe heavy fighting as German forces withdraw along the East Prussian frontier and lower Vistula while Russian reinforcements press in Galicia and Piotrkow.
