London dispatch reports sustained German offensives northeast of Verdun. Attacks aim to push back French trenches near Fort Douaumont and Beaumont, with heavy artillery dueling east of Verdun as Germans prepare for further assaults.
Mrs. Frank Sendizer dies while attempting to name her attacker by telephone in Mexico Missouri after a husband was slain and she herself was fatally wounded. Police find no solid clue beyond a discharged worker suspected of motive. The case remains unsolved as investigators seek the culprit.
Reports claiming an airship would depart with six hundred pounds of mail from Cordova to Nome were groundless. Post Office official James Fehse said the garbled telegram referenced accumulated Cordova mail and an airship line, but transmission errors misled the public and no official notice of air service was received.
Tate the Nome high school dog led a youth race along the winter trail with a large crowd watching. Peter Sather won by reaching Nome river bridge and back in 29 minutes 33 seconds, with Dan Kelley 29 55 and Alice Peterson 29 58 close behind. Kate Bongard and Eric Sather also posted solid times.
New York March 4 German commerce raiders are seeking cover in U S ports. The Gryhon reports two vessels lurking off Cape Henry waiting to dash for Newport News and two more ships believed to be German seeking to slip into an American port.
Amsterdam reports two German Zeppelins destroyed during morning operations near the Belgian front. One Zepp bombarded Egheze, caused damage and killed or injured eighteen children at a school, then fell after British bombardment. the crew perished. The second Zepp was hit by British fire and collapsed behind German lines. A captured dirigible was found near Maisaume with its label claiming it was seized from the French.
Secretary Wilson names a commission to settle labor differences on the government railroad at Anchorage Alaska. The group sails from Seattle March 8 and includes John A Moffett Hywell Davis and S M Squires who also serves as stenographer. The American Federation of Labor approved the list after his submission.
The wedding of Mrs. Clark and Mr. H H Moller is set for this evening at the Igloo and is expected to draw a large attendance due to the couple's popularity. The notice appears in The Family Paper from the Numo Daily Nugget.
Berlin states German forces undisputedly hold Douaumont village and approach fort Douaumont after clearing second line trenches. The operation covers about sixteen hundred yards with enemy forces driven back. The tally includes one thousand prisoners and significant supplies and eleven machine guns.
Paris reports from the war office that German gains near Verdun have expanded in the last twenty four hours. The Lemaine forces penetrated to the outskirts and now hold outlying posts, extending before and behind Verdun. The German advance comes with heavy casualties, continuing the pattern of the great campaign.
In Washington March the 70 to table Gore resolution vote hints at congressional stance on McLeMore action. Twelve opposed tabling including Jones O Gormatt and Chamberlain with Gore voting to lay the resolution on the table.
In St Louis on March 4 the national defense conference of mayors begins a two day session. The meeting will discuss the issue of preparedness and its impact on city leaders and civic duties.
