Navy officials say steel companies adopting a forty hour week under Walsh Healey labor rules could end the stalemate in shipbuilding if machinery makers also comply. Navy plans depend on broader industry follow through to unblock contracts.
In Los Angeles on March 3, Douglas Aircraft strikers settled into a prolonged picket line as police protected the plant. About 5600 workers received a five cent wage increase, which the company says was granted prior to the strike.

A three man group from Anchorage went to Beth el and joined two others, then traveled to Nunivak Island and Hooper Bay to conduct dental research among Eskimos. The team included Dr. L. M. Waugh of Columbia University as expedition head, Dr. E Seigel a Columbia biochemist, and Dr. T. J. Pyle supervising Alaska dental activities for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Carl Cox and Akial Hurstfield were rescued with Florence Hurstfield from a snowbound ranch eighteen miles south of Jacobs Lake Arizona near the Grand Canyon edge. They had lived in a small cabin for eight weeks as Dr Otto George led a Bureau of the Navy medical team into the region. The party, from Anchorage, left a day earlier and plans to return by late April amid heavy snows reported as fourteen feet in the area. The expedition aims to study tooth decay with Columbia University backing.
