June 28 Cheyenne reports a massive oil strike as a derrick and equipment are blown apart by gushing oil. The flow eludes capture, drawing crowds and forcing land rushes as workers build an improvised dam to contain the surge. A quarter mile reservoir forms and miners rush to stake nearby lands.
