International News Service reports that bone dry prohibition will be left to President Wilson if the Senate's food control bill passes. Senate leaders plan to ram through the measure quickly with an amendment banning distilled spirits but will defer to Wilson on vinous sales during the war. The Senate aims to finish the bill except for this issue, pending Wilson's acceptance of responsibility.
Washington reports Secretary of Labor Wilson acknowledged a serious prospect of a coast shipyard walkout planned for Saturday. He said mediation efforts by the Labor Department aim to avert a general tie up, despite unsettled talks with mediators. Officials warn of fallout on the administration ship construction program. The Juneau Empire reports Delegate Sulzer urged the Nome harbor project in a House speech. The bill includes 105000 for the Snake River mouth dredging and 45000 for Controler Bay harbor preliminary work as the House passes the rivers and harbors bill totaling over 27 million dollars.
The United States cruiser Olympia is wrecked on rocks near Block Island and likely lost. One crewman killed by falling timber. the coast guard and other vessels saved the rest. Olympia served as Dewey’s flagship at Manila in 1898 and is among the navy’s most historic ships.

The Public Information Committee announced the arrival of two contingents of U.S. troops in France. Secretary Baker declined comment. Also, the Alaska Lighterage Company dispatched a barge with coal and oil to Solomon in tow of the Genevieve, and a crew to unload the freighter Wainwright was sent to the East Coast port.
June reports say French forces push along the Aisne and near Laon as both sides commit large forces. The War Office notes fierce, indecisive combat with French gains at several points while German counterattacks stiffen defenses. Artillery roars along the British line as heavy engagements continue.
Negotiations underway to remove the Nome Kanarok railroad from its Seward Peninsula route and ship eighty miles of rails to Seattle for sale. Efforts through mortgage force to secure the transfer have faltered as stockholders are scattered across Europe and other countries, making locating them difficult.
