Seattle June 27 The large mercantile house McDougal and Southwick was placed in the hands of a receiver yesterday. It is one of the city's largest business houses and was affiliated with Chaffin house which recently failed in New York.

Sumatra quake and tsunami devastate coast towns in Java

An earthquake on Sumatra, the strongest yet on the island, wrecked coastal towns in Batavia Java. Reports say many killed, villages wiped out, and a following tidal wave drowning residents. Several volcanoes remained active with fears of further quakes. The bath house uses Moonlight water for baths.

Mrs Wheeler Struck by Express Wagon in Seattle

Mrs Mary Wheeler sixty four wife of Martin Wheeler was struck and run down by an express wagon on a Seattle side street. Witnesses say the driver was speeding and the mare and wagon passed over her body. She died at once and the expressman is blamed for the accident.

Roosevelt suffers spleen enlargement jungle fever rally

In Oyster Bay on June 27 Roosevelt is reported to have spleen enlargement and reduced vitality from jungle fever. Dr Alexander Lambert advises four months rest, but Roosevelt plans to remain active in the New York state campaign against rival parties. He cancels cross country trip and Pennsylvania engagements except Tuesday’s Harrisburg meeting.

Fourth of July Committee Plans Grand City Celebration

The Fourth of July committee met at city hall to organize a large celebration with land and aquatic sports, a military parade, and an automobile parade. F A Daniels presided with D EB Crowley as secretary, and multiple subcommittees were formed for finance music literary program land sports aquatic sports parade and other tasks. Honorary president is O D Cothran and grand marshal Captain Welch with Dr Sloan as president of the day.
