Suffragettes Continue Offensive Tactics Off English Coast

American destroyer torpedo boat claims second victory over a German submarine off the English coast. The destroyer rammed the sub as a periscope was spotted and believes the submarine was destroyed beneath the ship’s prow. The vessel returned to port with no further sign of the submarine.

Soldiers Foil Dynamite Attempt on Portland Water Works

In Portland Maine on June 21 two would be dynamiters near the city reservoir twenty miles from Portland were chased by guards guarding the water works. A running gun battle followed as the men fled and fired back. No injuries were reported and dynamite was found planted but the charge was not exploded. Guards were increased along pipelines and reservoirs after the incident.

Food Bill Debate Nearing Conclusion

Washington June 21 the long bitter food bill debate nears end as the house agrees to close debate by five this afternoon. Final vote likely Saturday night with leaders predicting few changes from the original bill. Red Cross drives and local fund raising are active in Nome with volunteers urging subscriptions and community support.

Italy Loses Seven Vessels to Submarine Attacks

Rome reports seven Italian ships sunk by Austro German submarines in the past week. Most losses were sailing craft, five destroyed by divers. Two steam vessels also fell to underwater boats, causing unease though trade remains overall intact. Coal ships losses are highlighted as most severe.

French Regain Ground In Vigorous Offensive

Paris June 21 A vigorous French offensive pushed forward today reclaiming much ground lost after yesterday’s German onslaught. The barrage cleared paths along the Aln-Bu reinforcement line as trenches were raided elsewhere. British guns prepared for another push on the Arras front with Haig’s artillery pounding Drocourt Queant and Hindenburg line as infantry engagements occurred on a smaller scale and counterattacks were repelled.

President Proclaims Red Cross Week in 1917

The president designates the week beginning June 18 as Red Cross week and urges national support for the American Red Cross. The proclamation states that all citizens may aid the armed forces by aiding relief at home and abroad and declares June 25, 1917, as Red Cross week. Woodrow Wilson signs the proclamation.

Troops Arrest Colorado Slackers in Historic Action

Leadville June 21 United States troops were sent from Denver to curb anti patriotic demonstrations and seize slackers. Forty two men who failed to register were arrested and brought to Salida in handcuffs. Anti conscription remonstrations were suppressed with force. Fresh eggs 75 cents per dozen and chickens for shop listed.
