Acting on a request by the Alaska territorial legislature, prospectors and mining claim owners are excluded from a law suspending assessment work for another year. Delegate Dimond notes the legislature voted unanimously to seek Alaska exclusion and Congress granted the request.
In Portland a national test case on peaceful picketing unfolds as state police keep drive of pickets from Bridal Veil mills. The union seeks an injunction to stop arrests while witnesses allege clubbing and removal from the mills site and surrounding leased ground.
Floods surge through the West again with rivers overrun their banks. At least eight deaths are reported in southern Texas and many people are missing. Debris clearance and repairs follow last week’s floods along the Republican Raw and Missouri Rivers from Colorado to the Mississippi.
Secretary of War Dern found Major General Benjamin D. John Custer a milk wagon driver was shot to death last night during the third night of rioting linked to the street car strike. About fifty people were injured, including seven in serious condition, as rioters burned six street cars and attacked police. several women were among the injured. Authorities said the situation was then under control.
