Seattle June 1 investigators before the coroner's jury pursue a theory that Blanch Smith murdered Samuels. Police claim a chain of evidence undermines suicide and points to Smith. Testimony cites a Nome cable demanding $3000 and threats linked to Samuels' death.
One hundred eight navy officers and men who took part in the Vera Cruz capture were honored by the government. Eleven enlisted men received medals of honor and a $100 gratuity for extraordinary heroism. The rest earned letters of official commendation from Secretary Daniels.
The American and English polo teams met for the international championship. England won the first game 81 to 2, dominating the early match in Meadow Brook.
The Victoria arrived yesterday morning with passengers and freight. She will depart this afternoon between three and four for Seattle then proceed to St Michael to unload and continue to Seattle. Passenger list includes Sol Anderson, Mrs Grace Gorham, L Garfekle, Joe Sheldon, Walter Johneen, Mrs Gardner, Raymond Pion, Mrs A N Nittel, Miss Lownie, Moyne Hewing, and many others.

A riot erupted as Western Federation militants attacked a parade, detaching riders, hurling stones. Rioters seized and dynamited a union safe while authorities struggled to restore order amid tensions within the miners and industrial workers movements.
June 15 1914 reports say Mayor Frank Curren was thrown from a second story window during a riot and sustained minor injuries. The unrest continued with fears of more trouble as a steamer Corwin sails for Teller and York on June 20.
Mount Lassen remains violently eruptive with tall black smoke, ashes scattering sixteen miles from the crater as observers from California and Stanford note no immediate danger. A second eruption sends dense smoke high into the sky. a lumberman, Lance Graham, was killed by a falling boulder amid new crater activity.
The Union Construction Company will do considerable work on Seward peninsula this summer with dredges built for Cole, MMtchell and Brower on Bangor creek and for Circle City and Magstodan creek projects. A second dredge will be shipped to Davidson's Landing via Teller for winter assembly, and a three and one half foot bucket dredge is planned for Kongarok riv on Taylor Creek property. The Nome arrival follows work on Otter creek for Riley and Marston, delivering a $1200 six day yield. A four foot cable bucket dredge for a Portugal mining operation was completed after assessing York dredge performance. New and second hand goods of all kinds are advertised.
