The public utilities bill to abolish unnecessary holding companies passed the Senate 56 to 32. Support came from 45 Democrats, nine Republicans, one Progressive and one former Laborite, with 18 Democrats and 14 Republicans opposing. The measure now proceeds to the House.
Isolated violence linked to the lumber strike rises in Washington and Oregon. Police report six assailants from Mount Vernon and Bellingham attacked workers. they were arrested and face second degree assault charges after being handed to authorities. Five claimed they were hired to guard mills.
The Central Political Council of the Nanking Nationalists refused Japanese authorities demands regarding Peiping and Tientsin, injecting a new unsettled factor into the North China situation.
Two new retail venues start operations in Anchorage area. Alaska Liquor Store and Alaska Emporium, offering general merchandise, situated opposite the Telephone Office, invite shoppers for a broad inventory and storefront access.
President Roosevelt spoke to the West Point class calling for a permanent peace backed by mutual understanding. Federal authorities file kidnapping charges against the Waleys and Mahan in the Tacoma case. George Weyerhaeuser had been moved to Idaho during the abduction as investigators finish fingerprinting at a Spokane hideout. Arraignments planned in Salt Lake City with possible life imprisonment under state law.
The house democrat majority began a half billion dollar tax bill at the president's request. It seeks two year extension and includes taxes such as the three cent postage and one cent a gallon federal gasoline charge. A second bill to close loopholes and adjust rates is planned.
