The Senate Education and Labor Committee condemns deplorable conditions in government construction. It urges new legislation to replace the Bacon Davis act with a law guaranteeing local prevailing wages on federal construction over two thousand dollars. It cites kickbacks and underpayment through contractor abuses.
Fire destroyed the three story Delmonte Hotel in Aberdeen injuring five and killing three occupants. Among the dead were J Joergen and Joe Martin trapped on the second floor and Max Larson who fell from a third floor window. Several others suffered fractures and serious burns. hospital conditions were listed as critical. The building was 46 years old and a total loss.
Agua Caliente resort in Mexico, once a palatial casino popular with film stars and tourists, was padlocked by a decree from the Mexican president banning all gambling after Saturday night. The hotel spa restaurant and bars are closed, with the resort costing six to ten million dollars to build.
Worcester reports Newell Sherman confessed to murdering his wife after an accident on a foggy lake. He claimed he overturned the canoe to free himself from his wife and thrived to win the affection of a sixteen year old girl. He faced first degree murder charges and is described as from an old New England family.
