A senate committee proposes a new amendment to the food control bill creating a three member board under the president for food administration. The plan sets a minimum wheat price at 1.75 per bushel and broadens government licensing and purchasing powers to widen control of food. The measure is favored by a senate majority and could be voted on soon.
Paris dispatch reports German efforts along the Verdun front failed to regain ground lost to French counterattacks. French operations northwest of Verdun realigned the front and extended wedge depth nearly two thirds of a mile from Avogourt Wood to west of Hill 804.
Washington July 18 British armored motor detachments are said to participate in the new Russian Galician offensive with Italian forces while Belgian detachments cooperate on the eastern front. The Belgian units were dispatched to Russia soon after the war began according to an official Russian embassy communication.
Amsterdam reports from the German capital say liberals in Berlin view Dr Michael’s chancellorship as a temporary move to delay affairs until a military dictatorship is set up under General Ludendorff. The Kaiser is feared to permit the military to rule all civil government functions.
