Bisbee Arizona residents suspend business and drive out I W W supporters amid rising copper district unrest. Citizens league of 1500 plus batches of armed locals search homes, detain and ship industrialists to other towns. Douglas reports 300+ locals join roundup. Bisbee authorities protest to state officials.
New York reports orders to recruit boards to speed up army draft preparations as August mobilization nears. President has set a draft date and aims to begin drawing registrants at once, though state organization may delay uniform starts. Secretary Baker says readiness should allow first five hundred thousand men to be drawn soon.
Washington July 13. The War Department released the first detailed draft plan for the national army. It calls for 6870000 registrants to be selected, with over 500000 to be used in the regular army and the rest to fill vacancies in the national guard. Alaska’s quota is listed as 696 men. Draft dates for the territory were not specified but expected before the end of the registration period.
Associated Press reports Seattle and surrounding areas tightening security as troops guard bridges and tunnels to arrest railroad laborers and others crossing mountains. Authorities aim to suppress the I W W movement as summer labor gatherings rise in the Pacific Northwest.
London dispatch reports German efforts near Nieuport over the last two days met with complete failure. Fighting continues but the German drive appears to stall with no clear breakthrough, signaling a halt in the advance in that sector.
Petrograd July 13 The Russian forces continued to push forward in Galicia adding several villages to captured positions. They expect battles near Deling and in the Lemberg region as Teutons prepare a stand. The war office reports 860 captured, including 10 officers, with most prisoners Germans as Austrian and Russian forces contend for dominance in Bukovina and eastern Galicia.
A French navy mine sweeper struck while operating near Shattla and was sunk along with eleven crew members. The incident involved damage to Jupiter bay and related English forces in the area. Naval authorities reported the loss and ongoing search and rescue efforts.
London July 13 The British and Belgian air forces relied on artillery to halt a powerful German push in the Nieuport region of Belgium. An official statement reports only eighteen British casualties, including those captured, despite heavy fighting and German gains.
Washington reports a six week negotiation with steel producers yields an agreement that the government will have access to all steel product at a cost based price. The arrangement aims to prevent monopolies and ensure expansion meets wartime demand while price to the government undergoes an intensive inquiry by the Federal Trade Commission.
Mrs. Mary Bradford of Colorado was selected by the national body’s committee to head the National Education Association. She is the first woman nominated for a state office in Colorado and is noted as a lecturer on education and former parliamentary law instructor.
Washington July 12 the senate remains at odds over the food bill despite efforts to adjust provisions. Democratic leaders seek the presidents opinion on acceptable compromises hoping executive views will hasten action. Administration supporters admit numerous variances threaten final passage before the planned vote. The president concentrates on smoothing the impasse by meeting with senators and holding conferences at the executive headquarters.
