Berlin reports a major British sea and air assault on German Bay shores near the North Sea coast on July four. German air fleet defended coast effectively, forcing attackers to retreat amid fog and mines with no damage to German positions.
German Crown Prince forces repulse French in Argonne and seize about three thousand prisoners, mostly aging reservists. Verdun fighting continues with French defenses being overtaken. Attacks near Arras and Nieuport persist amid heavy resistance. Night trench assaults near Labasse yield ground and key positions. Nancy and Harwich suffer bomb damage as German air activity rises.
Report from Sayville July 7 says Italian forces are repulsed in Gradski and south of Pontebba, with prisoners taken at Cormans after bitter fighting. Engagement before Triente degrades to artillery duel and Italian public riots intensify in Naples Palermo Reggio amid claims of slow progress.
A former college professor known as Holt or Muenter died after injuries from an apparent fall in a Minneola jail. Authorities say a skull fracture from hitting the cement floor followed a plunge from the top of his cell door, with the death occurring shortly before noon. The exact circumstances remain uncertain.
A dispatch from Ambassador Gerard in Berlin regarding Germany’s reply to the submarine warfare note was received by the State Department and sent to the president at Cornish. No details were released, but the message reportedly contained only informal references to the German note’s contents.

In Glen Cove on July 7 1906 Erich Munter is identified as the man who tried to assassinate J P Morgan at his home. Munter is wanted for the 1906 murder of his wife Leona Munter and was a former Harvard language professor who disappeared after indictment. State Detective S P Smith Theodore Hiller and A T Brown recognize him from prior acquaintance.
Morgan shows marked improvement and can speak at length with partners in New York. Doctors say he will be up within days. note also Carleton & Co advertises Victrola records and Lomen Bros promotes Nugget subscription.
War Office reports German forces broke Russian center at Krznnik and chase shattered Russian units toward two directions. About fifty thousand Russians captured, with many more fallen as retreating troops are cut off. German success surrounds a large Russian sector along the Wiepr river and rapid progress toward Warsaw and Ivangorod continues.
Berlin dispatches claim German submarines breached the Thames entrance barrier and patrols near London. General von der Goltz says Turks repulse French and British at many points, with heavy enemy losses, while Petrograd reports of a Baltic sea battle are ridiculed as inflated.
Terrific cloudbursts have destroyed many towns and villages in southern Italy. The heaviest damage is in Apulia with hundreds driven from homes. Capaignia Minervino and Tavernele suffered heavy or total destruction as floods cut off low lying areas near Taranto. Thousands reportedly without homes or food.
Washington reports the preliminary draft of the German note sent to the president by Ambassador Gerard is not satisfactory to the executive. The note again dodges direct American contentions, continuing the pattern of evasion noted in the previous communication.
London July 7 The Petrograd correspondent reports the Russian war office shows no fear for Warsaw’s fate. They say the city is now strongly defended and little chance the enemy can bring about its fall.
