Former Yeoman Convicted Selling U.S. Navy Secrets

A federal jury in Los Angeles convicted Harry Thomas Thompson, former U S Navy yeoman, on charges of conspiring to sell defense secrets to a high ranking Imperial Japanese Navy officer. Conviction carries a maximum twenty year prison term. Sentencing set for Monday morning.

Pilot’s bid to fly Seattle from Anchorage using car engine faces delays

Pilot Russell Owen, backed by Lt Commander Toshi Miyazaki, tried three times to launch a non stop flight from Anchorage to Seattle using a car engine powered aircraft. Thick weather over Prince William Sound halted the attempt after initial takeoffs failed and heavy winds forced a return. The Department of Commerce denied an experimental permit for the flight meant to prove car engine feasibility in aviation.

Arctic Airways Fourth of July Flight Over Alaska Seen As Start Of Regular Route

A sightseeing flight on the Fourth of July by Arctic Airways piloted by Chester Brown and Frank Whaley took twelve passengers from Nome at 2:30 PM. The non land, non stop trip over glaciers, rivers, and coastal landmarks ranged from Hammon field to Cape Prince of Wales, with Eskimo camps and mining towns along the route, ending after a long coastal arc toward Port Clarence Bay.

Trains Collide Near Cleveland Injuring Four

Four people received minor injuries when the second Missiou section of the Big Four Railroad ran into the first near North East southwest of Cleveland. The crash occurred in dense fog at about 20 mph as the second section could not stop in time. Govt Officials Enroute To Point Barrow By Plane

A group of Alaska officials led by Noel Wien travels from Nome toward Point Barrow in a re conditioned Belanca aircraft. The delegation includes Claude M. Hirsch J F Vai Ackeren David B E Thomas and Jack Rinan with office heads in Juneau Washington and Fairbanks. Weather delays keep them grounded in Nome as they plan Barrow flight once conditions improve and then return via Unalakleet Anchorage to Juneau by the 12th to 15th. They report satisfaction with observations and offer to aid local development efforts.

Steamer Baldwin Reaches Keewalik Aiming for Nome Arrival

Boat movements reporter Harnish of the Alaska Line says the Steamer Baldwin is now at Keewalik and should reach Nome in two or three days. He also notes the SS Dellwood from Seattle is likely to arrive around July 15.

Nome Fourth of July Celebration Draws Big Nome Crowds

Nome’s July fourth celebration drew large crowds for a morning concert by the Nome Brass Band and a concise but well received literary program. The day’s sports drew heavy attendance with races and events, a 1 AM patriotic concert by the Nome Band, and speeches by Judge J. H. S. Morison and Rev. Cunningham. The day ended with a baseball loss for Nome to Little Creek, 10 to 8, before crowds dispersed and plans for continued coverage.
