War Department orders a survey for an Army Air Corps base in Fairbanks. A three member board appointed to locate the site, marking a vital Alaska issue.
The War Department announced a three officer board will select a site near Fairbanks for a new aviation base. Lt. Col Wilmot A. Danielson Maj Otto G Trunk and Maj Albro L Parsons will serve. Delegate Dimond says the survey could start a major Army Aviation Base development in the Territory with findings due before the next Congress.
Detroit July 2 Dayton Dean pleaded guilty to kidnapping and murder in the Black Legion execution of Charles A Poole on May 12. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment. Twelve other men are charged in Poole s slaying and sentencing for Dean was deferred.
Delegate Dimond announced that the Post Office and Interior department committee authorized a new Sitka Federal Building costing 212000, to replace the fire‑destroyed structure. It will be funded under the 60 million dollar federal building appropriation and may start next winter.
Secretary Henry Morgenthau Jr. reported the U S Treasury deficit for the year ended June 30 at 4.4 billion dollars, the largest peacetime red ink figure. He put the public debt at 33.75 billion, with offsets or recoverable assets at 8.85 billion and noted the figures could shift in tonight’s daily statement. Excluding the fund for paying the bonus, the deficit would be 2.7 billion.
The document names committee members and organizers for a 4th of July celebration. It lists divisions including finance athletics program refreshments and baseball committee with individual names such as C H Code chief W W Laws and J C Kennedy. Zioncheck traveled home by train after a trip to Minneapolis and acted normally. He said he does not know whether to sue the airplane company over an action involving his travel plans.
