In Jersey City Mrs. Maryon Cooper Hewitt appeared in criminal court weak and escorted by two nurses and a policeman. She faces charges of attempted death by own action and being a California fugitive from justice with arraignment deferred to September 24. Bail set at 3500 on each charge. she returns to hospital. The California charge alleges a plot to sterilize her daughter Ann to share in a large estate. an overdose of a sedative is tied to the death by own action charge.

Five Die as Bus Crashes Above Natural Bridge Gorge

Five people are killed and 24 injured when a passenger bus skidded in rain on approach to Natural Bridge Virginia. Driver J J Olderson steered to avoid a plunge, but the bus rolled over near a signboard, killing four in the front seats and Olderson, with eight others unhurt or less severely hurt among the 32 aboard.

Officials to Barrow on Indian Affairs Hospital Transfer

On an official trip to Alaska four Indian Affairs leaders depart Tuesday to assume hospital duties at Pt Barrow from Dr Henry Griest. Dr James Townsend heads the Health Dept in DC, David E Thomas is state chief, C M Hirst runs Alaska Indian education. They travel via Fairbanks Nome and join Dr J F Van Ackeren en route to Barrow and surrounding sites.

In Paris on July 1 striking opera performers danced before a closed Opera Comique with police guarding the audience.
