Washington January 19 Democrats sought to head off revolts against Roosevelt's social security plan while some Republicans backed broader benefits for the unemployed and aged. Hearings rush next week as Houses recess over the weekend.
Weather disruptions spread quickly across the central states causing travel delays and power outages. Officials report snow and freezing conditions, with authority figures advising caution as residents endure severe cold and widespread impacts.

Aboard the Steamer Starr near Dutch Harbor, Mrs Mary Kelly, 40, is charged with first degree murder in the death of twins born en route to Unalaska. Detectives say she killed Mrs Harry C Otto Johanson in what she claimed was self defense. The ship was near Seattle and the babies were doing well as they were transferred to Unalaska hospital.
L Hamilton dies at 43 while on a business and pleasure trip. Crosson famed as part of the Ham and Bud duo. AP report notes arrival of Joe Crosson family en route to New York and references to his theatre era and Pacific Alaska Air ties.
In Flemington on January 19, Hauptmann's defense reviewed his financial records to counter State claims of a 49 960 dollar income. They argued the ransom did not appear in any single account. The State noted bank balances rose from 200 dollars to 2,500 dollars and deposits in Mt. Vernon New York, plus silver coin transactions.
