Washington January 18 The House rules committee named Boston attorney Herman L Whipple to conduct witness examinations over the leak. He plans to arrange his practice and depart for the capital soon. Hearings are expected to resume next Monday and party members fear whitewashing or blame if leaks are exposed.
President Wilson seeks Senate confirmation for five Navy officers to be promoted to rear admiral. The nominees include Tyler Naval Constructor Bruisted Medical Inspector Grayson personal physician to the president, Pay Master McGowan, and Civil Engineer Harris. Grayson facing opposition as a physician to the president, with debate over his seniority and qualifications.
The house committee released Thomas W. Lawson's letter endorsing Whipple for the examiner post, asserting Whipple's integrity and probed ability. The panel said they would pursue the investigation with full effort, dispelling fears of scapegoating Whipple.
