Akira E Pierce 44 former vice president and manager of Home Savings Loan Association died in Walla Walla prison hospital where he served less than a year of a 20 to 60 year sentence for charges tied to his financial collapse. He died of angina pectoris.
Representative John McGroarty of California presented the Townsend Plan for old age pensions to the House. He claimed ninety five members support the measure and predicted more would be persuaded to ensure its inclusion in the legislative program.
General Kuno von Steuben aged 79 died at his home. He described finding the Lindbergh baby’s body in the Hopewell brush and notified authorities. Orville Wilson corroborated that the body lay on its face with one foot detached from the rest of the skeleton.
In Juneau on January 17 the Alaska House named committee chairs led by Banks and Green for Election Laws, Nerland for Education, Norland for Fisheries, and others. A liquor question committee was formed with eight members. The Senate approved chairs for Finance Taxation Education Fisheries and Game Judiciary and Manufacturing and Labor.
Ottawa reports Dr Allan Roy Dafoe, physician to the Dionne quintuplets, has been named Commander in the Order of the British Empire. The announcement credits his care of the quintuplets and highlights the role of quality goods and advertising in business today.
Washington reports the administration sent a five point social security program to Congress. It includes employer payroll taxes for unemployment insurance, compulsory old age and poverty insurance for workers, a fifty fifty funded old age pension for needy, a voluntary federal annuity option, large federal grants for needy mothers and children, and expanded public health service.
Federal officers finished a six hour gun battle at a rented home in Oklaohwa Florida killing Fred Barker and his mother Kate aged 55. They continue to search for Alvin Karpis Arthur Barker and other gang members tied to the Bremner kidnapping and the two hundred thousand dollar ransom from a St Paul banker.
Weather delays keep three aircrafts immobilized at Nulato. Pacific Alaska Airways mail pilot Jones Mirow of Mirow Air Service and Whaley of Roust Air ways are all detained by adverse conditions. Expect days of hold until skies clear.
Four inmates escaped San Quentin in a quick breakout led by Rudolph Straight. A running gunfight ended with three recaptured and Straight dying from wounds. Warden James B. Holohan lay near death after beating. Clyde Stevens, a paroled bank robber, was captured. hostages including Frank Stephens and Mark Noon were wounded.
The Northwestern Alaska Chamber of Commerce board met in special session to pass on the special legislative committee report. A proposed legislation list to be brought before the current Legislature is expected to be made public within a day or two.

Tuesday’s meeting of the chamber committee reviewed a detailed report on the city economy and proposed actions. Weather data from Nome’s office shows a 52 degree warmer Tuesday than last year with a mean daily temperature of 20 degrees.
