The Alaska Legislature organized with Luther C. Hess of Fairbanks elected Senate president and J. S. Hoffman of Seward named House speaker. Jane Farrelly of Fairbanks became Senate secretary and Margaret Otteson of Ketchikan the House clerk. Adjournment set to 2 p.m. Wednesday for committee appointments.

Six convicts escaped from Folsom prison today injuring Warden James Holohan critically. They abducted four members of the prison board and fired machine guns at pursuing guards in a bold breakout.

Startling new witnesses in Lindbergh ransom trial

In Flemington on January 16 the state pressed handwriting expert Cassdy Richmond who testified Hauptmann wrote the ransom notes. A defense witness said Isadore Fisch tried to sell hot money. Private investigator Henry Kress claimed two more men aided the ransom scheme and that Gustav Lukatis holds crucial information. He alleged Fisch and others tried to offload fifty thousand dollars at seventy five cents on the dollar. Kress said two suspects fled when questioned. He urged DOJ cooperation to lock up the principals.

Washington January 15 The inter departmental committee on territories unanimous approved a plan to settle the Matanuska Valley by sending 100 to 200 families to establish farms next spring. A government corporation to organize settlers was suggested by FERA officials. Plans for a highway from Anchorage and tax relief for settlers were approved, with five years of no interest or principal payments. The move aims to seed future agricultural settlements in Alaska.
