Sources say progress toward releasing the kidnapped Mattson boy is likely, with officials optimistic about a breakthrough though details and ransom payment have not been disclosed. The father remains relieved after law enforcement pause and Mattson family members speak publicly.
Major General E M Markham said in his annual report to Congress that 15 863 250 should be profitably spent on river harbor and flood control in Washington Oregon and Alaska for fiscal years 1937 and 1928 with 4 576 250 for regular maintenance and the rest for new construction Alaska projects include Nome Ketchikan Dry Pass Wrangell Narrows Cordova Lowell Creek and Salmon River with specific dredging and breakwater work and local contributions noted.

Sam Rayburn of Texas was chosen as floor leader of the House with a large Democratic majority. He defeated John J. O’Connor of New York 184 to 127 in a closed caucus. Rayburn plans to guide the party’s 332 members and expects cooperation with Roosevelt’s program. O’Connor remains Rules Committee chairman and Lea of California becomes Interstate Commerce chair.
The United Automobile Workers report strikes in GM plants at Atlanta 700 workers, Kansas City 1320, Cleveland 7000, Flint 8200, plus Fisher body plants at Norwood and Guide Lamp Co in Anderson 2800. Some units closed due to material shortages. nine thousand idle at Anderson Delco-Remy and other plants totaling about 39,000 idle workers.
