Nazi officials said German warships retaliated against two Spanish merchantmen seizing one and forcing the other ashore. Admiral Graf Spee seized the Aragon and Koenigsberg forced Soton ashore on the Basque coast. Basque orders patrol coast as Spain’s civil war deepens.
Tacoma detectives linked a possible kidnap case to an abandoned campsite where a boy's clothing items and a detective magazine were found. A suspect, 33, resembling the kidnapper, was arrested after trying to sell a lady's cameo ring. He is in jail after fingerprinting and questioning by G men.
Tonight at 7 p m a large fireworks display is scheduled after warnings announced earlier at 6 30 p m. Gene Elms Gus O Leary Kurt Sprenger along with Chuck O Leary and Tony Bolan will handle the display. weather today looks favorable though conditions remain uncertain.

Official in Charge R L Frost notes December 17 ended the third month of airplane weather flights at Fairbanks. Pilot Bert Levi made 130 flights, flying twice daily to 17 000 feet, mostly empty, recording temperature humidity and air pressure with an aero meteorograph. Reports are telegraphed to Washington and San Francisco as weather data for aviation.
Undated report notes 175 deaths nationwide during New Year celebrations with about 150 from automobile accidents. Authorities detail violent fatalities across the country as the holiday period ends.

Rome January 2 Britain and Italy signed a gentlemen s agreement to keep the Mediterranean status quo and ease tensions from last year s friction. Count Galeazzo Ciano and Sir Eric Drummond signed the communique noting the pact aims to help regulate the Spanish civil war as a danger to stability. A fascist commentator said the accord does not alter the Rome Berlin understanding on European issues including Spain.
The Treasury Department issued a new call for bids to construct a federal building in Nome including a post office court house jail and other offices. Bids will be opened on April 6 1937 after revisions lowered costs to fit the budget.
SAN FRANCISCO January 2 Predictions that federal action will end the strike gave way to hopes of settlement by negotiation. Observers expect new Congress to pass legislation opening next Tuesday to provide machinery. McGrady flew East yesterday. E W Marsh labor department conciliator took over negotiations and said no conference before Monday. McGrady will report to Secretary Perkins who might discuss it with President Roosevelt.
