Washington December 17 The House Appropriations Committee considered that Congress may need to raise instead of cut ordinary government appropriations while aiming for a balanced budget by trimming emergency expenditures.

Digging Fossils Livelihood For Nevada Couple

In Tonopah Nevada Mr and Mrs Percy Train live in American Canyon Pershing County. They earn a good living digging fossils of prehistoric animals and selling them to museums. They roam the Northwest and Alaska for bones but spend most time in Nevada. They also seek rare metals and gems and once leased an opal field near the Oregon line. Once gold mining proved less lucrative they turned to fossil hunting and gem discovery amid three toed horses saber toothed tigers monster bats and extinct beasts.

Wise County Teacher 22 Convicted in Father’s Death

Edith Maxwell 22 a former School teacher is found guilty by a Wise County jury of second degree murder in the death of her father Trigg Maxwell a miner after an argument when she returned home late. Her punishment is fixed at twenty years in prison. The first trial yielded a first degree murder verdict with a twenty five year sentence later set aside by the State Supreme Court.

Navy Plans Expanded Build Up as Naval Pacts End

Washington December 18. Navy officials foresee a 1942 program including two new battleships to match rising powers, with a budget near 528 million dollars and 1910 aircraft planned by 1942. The plan, if approved, would push U S shipbuilding past 1922 levels and expand auxiliary vessels.

Final Meeting Tonight of Board of Equalization

The Board of Equalization reduced no one and raised several property assessments in a Tuesday session. North Pole Bakery moved from 6000 to 10000 while Nevada rose to 6000 and John F Devine to 3000. Lomen Commercial, Polson Water Delivery, and Standard Oil also saw increases. A committee of Councilmen Gross and Hagen will review North Pole Bakery’s contention. No other complainants appeared.

Trotzky to Seek Mexican Refuge After Oslo Denial

The Mexican Interior Department said Leon Trotzky applied to live in Mexico and would move from Norway soon. Mexican official Adalberto Tejeda noted Trotzky must respect Mexican law and limit communist propaganda. Trotzky had refused the invitation without full political freedom.

A. Polet reports two sled loads of Christmas trees bound for Nome and due Sunday. The community Christmas tree, nearly twenty feet tall, is enroute and set for arrival around the same time. Orders for individual trees are being taken daily with delivery likely Monday or any day after arrival.

Board To Hold Final Session On Assessments

Residents with raised assessments heard that Nevada would refrain from protesting and that a wire to Standard Oil Co. in the States might be needed. Lomen Commercial Co. may attend Friday night’s meeting to discuss the assessment, while Ed Bergstrom of Polson Water Delivery plans to appear before the Board. After more discussions the Board adjourned to meet again at 7 PM tonight.
