Bishop Patrick Peoffeord of Winona was shot and seriously injured by Father Aloysius Lesches a priest found to be violently insane. The attack occurred in the bishop's home library as the motive and entry method remain unknown amid tense Greco Turkish relations.
Report from Leelin Aug 2 states Austro Hungarian forces and German units report breakthroughs along the Galacia front, taking a battery and thousands of prisoners as Russian lines collapse near the Zeliia and Weipa rivers. Paul Singerman head of Singerman & Sons clothing merchants died this morning at age seventy. A longtime benefactor to the blind of the Northwest he gave much of his fortune to endowment and upkeep of institutions for the blind earning the title “Friend of the blind.”
A St Michael radio notes the Bear will arrive around 2 a.m. with the mail from La Touche leaving Nome at 1 today. Goosak reports a break in at his King's Way cabin overpowering a suit of clothes. Harbor committee hints at dredging plans to protect the entrance, with Ernst brothers and local dredge men ready to work. Jetty and shallow basin dredging discussed. public details not yet released.
Washington Aug. 28. Reports indicate the Chinese Republic has authorized Charles M Schwab to place orders for a large fleet of submarines with U S constructors. Agents of the steel corporation are said to be negotiating on weapons and machinery for the vessels. The order is believed to cover at least one hundred submarines.
