North Star Arrives at Nome to Begin Arctic Coast Voyage

The Office of Indian Affairs vessel North Star, captained by Frank Whitlam, arrived in Nome to discharge freight for Indian Affairs activities. It will sail to Kotzebue, meet the Derblay, then proceed toward Point Barrow, carrying officials, teachers, nurses, and reindeer service personnel bound for Barrow, Kotzebue, and Deering stations.

Nome City Council Last Night Meeting Highlights

The Nome City Council met in regular session approving bills and finances, receiving communications, and hearing Father Cunningham thank the city for lumber aiding church sidewalk construction. Fire Chief Laws called the temporary federal building a serious fire hazard due to wiring. The council offered the old school building for federal offices, condemned the Hammond Company building as a fire risk, and accepted Ben Gillette’s $50 offer for twenty feet of a lot to build a garage. Engineer Lyle reported a revetment survey along Nome’s south side. Colonel Wild would not advance the project through his department but urged direct talks with Delegate Dimond. The wholesale liquor license for Nome Liquor Store, H. Greenberg, and Sol Lewis was referred to the liquor committee.

Reindeer Pioneer W T Lopp Tours Alaska

W T Lopp, famed in Nome and Seward Peninsula circles, arrived aboard the North Star of the Office of Indian Affairs in Nome and recounted his twelve year absence from Alaska, including 1925 work in Baffin Land for the Hudson Bay Company and a failed reindeer project due to scarce reindeer moss. His current trip, funded by the Indian Rights Association, aims to assess reindeer prospects for natives and to seek a path that excludes white traders.

Chas W Hawkesworth head of the Office of Indian Affairs in Alaska tours Bureau Stations north to 88 Point Barrow visiting Nome and Sullivan Coan to assess conditions among Eskimo and Indians. He seeks improved cooperation and possible cooperative business ventures under the Wheeler-Howard Act to foster self support and advancement for native communities.
