Northwestern Alaska Fair Opens With Parade and Program

The Northwestern Alaska Fair and Mid-Summer Festival opened last evening with a unique outdoor parade featuring floats and native groups. President L E Bynning welcomed a fair sized audience and outlined the fair’s purpose and territorial financial support. The program included Camp Fire Girls demonstrations, a reading by Georgia Slack, a skit by five young women, and the introduction of an auto-glide in Nome. A live porcupine exhibited after noon drew a large crowd to the rear glass case.

Mattern and Jones Fly to Arctic Coast

Mattern and Jones with radio man John Stump left Fairbanks at 11:10 a.m. to fly to the Arctic Coast and over the Arctic Ocean, planning to return tonight. Smirnov the Russian agent will depart for Aklavik tomorrow to set up a radio base, according to the Fairbanks News-Miner.
