P A Service reports nearly four hundred dead from a hurricane and flood across southern Texas, with Galveston bearing about half the deaths. The seawall saved Galveston from greater loss, though it is now nearly destroyed and will require rebuilding. Additional late reports push the Galveston death toll toward four hundred.
A series of telegraph reports from Aug 18 to Aug 19 describe damage and loss after a hurricane. Rumors claim five hundred Galveston bodies washed ashore near Houston, while ships like the White Star liner and the Dunsley were torpedoed or sunk nearby.
