Japanese Vessel Anchors Off St Lawrence Island Nome

Eskimo reports of a large Japanese steamer drop anchor off Gamble on July 21 near Nome. Eskimos sent boats to the ship offering barter for ivory and fur and warning of a U S Cutter Nortland’s expected arrival. The captain spoke English and offered liquor. locals feared the vessel’s presence and the ship departed before the cutter arrived. Several larger Japanese ships have been sighted in the northern Bering Sea this summer, likely surveying fishing grounds.

Milligan Reports Hydraulicing Progress in Solomon River Mines

Chester Milligan and Mrs. Milligan arrived by train from the Solomon River area and described active hydraulicking and prospecting along Big Hurrah Creek beaches near pits numbered 5 6 and 7.
