International News Service reports Paris says the German war office details a furious, unceasing bombardment south of the Somme with hundreds of guns. French defense replies vigorously as both sides trade shelling and attempts to advance are indecisive amid ongoing Verdun artillery activity.
Berlin reports that French forces gained a foothold along a five hundred yard front south of the Somme in heavy fighting. German counteractions in the Harbozow and Kovel sectors are described as halted with heavy enemy losses and no further advance along eastern front sections from Riga to lower Galicia.
Report from Salonika indicates British forces steadily advance on the Balkan front. Allied lines push forward on both eastern and western sectors with several minor positions captured amid slow progress due to mountainous terrain.
