Wiley Post and Will Rogers departed Renton Airport at 9 15 A M for Alaska with Post’s wife remaining behind noting the trip may be strenuous. Rogers said a fish dinner in Kodiak may occur before continuing toward Juneau and Juneau was the intended destination.
In Hillsboro Oregon a train fell about 110 feet into a rocky canyon in rough timber country. Five men died: E N Johnson engineer F A Walker fireman A J Both brakeman all of Wheeler Oregon B A Curtain of Portland brakeman and D Frand of Bridge Oregon carpenter. Bodies not recovered.
Washington August 7 government efforts to settle Pacific Coast labor disputes to avert another general shipping strike are bearing fruit, Assistant Secretary of Labor McGrady said today.
Five of six convicts escaped from the Missouri State Hospital’s criminal insane ward and roamed the countryside with sheriffs deputies and armed posses in pursuit. Authorities say the men were among the ward’s worst and escaped by forcing guards to open doors with sharpened weapons. One later returned to the hospital citing poor eyesight.
Senator Borah expects Democrats will face a debate on law riders to the tax bill including the soldiers bonus and farm refinancing. Administration leaders plan early consideration in January for the soldiers bonus with ninety six percent of certificate value paid.
In Rhode Island's first district, Charles F. Risk, former judge, defeats Antonio Prince by about ten thousand votes after pledging to repudiate the Roosevelt administration. The election marks a Republican win in a seat formerly held by a Democrat with New Deal policy at issue. Senate leaders push to pass a new tax bill within a week as Congress plans to adjourn around August 17.
London August 6 Paul Humphrey MacNeill an Infra Red Ray instrument inventor from Niles Michigan announced he had been demonstrating devices to the British government for months. Reports claim one device can locate distant aircraft by engine heat and even detect a hidden man by body heat during a demonstration to the Air Ministry.

Construction projects over $25,000 fall under PWA. smaller or non construction clerical and professional projects go to WPA. loan applications go to PWA. housing slum clearance is by PWA Housing Division.
