Secretary of the Interior Ickes approved a PWA loan and grant totaling $100,000 for Nome. The action, announced in Washington, covers the federal assistance to Nome.
Nome Mayor Rex F Swartz announces PWA approval for a 100000 loan and grant for Nome under docket 9627. Delegates Griffin and Anthony J Dimond confirm the award and note funds will be available upon congressional passage, with Dimond hopeful for two week enactment and Tydings introducing the bill.
In Ketchikan on April 19 the district court heard the first alienation of affections suit with Harold Hanson suing Martin Enochsen for ten thousand dollars. The Hansons wed in Finmarken, Norway, fourteen years ago as she seeks a divorce. A telegram from Ketchikan also notes the arrival of the Bering Sea Patrol fleet including the flagship Tahoe the Aurora and Calypso.
Tacoma reports Elmer McCune a 30 year old rabbit rancher was grilled by police over the alleged axe murder of his wife. Ruth Dunlap, 36, former Seattle resident, led officers to a grave behind McCune’s home near Puyallup where the wife’s body was exhumed. Dunlap and McCune say they lived together since November and Dunlap will sign a statement about the slaying and burial site.
Miss Dunlap recounted McCune admitted a quarrel and striking his wife with a small axe after she hit him with a stick. He claimed self defense and that he buried her after hours of reviving efforts. Mrs McCune’s disappearance prompted a two day hunt led by her mother Mrs May Bulger. Leroy McCune, seven, was located near Puyallup. the family was said to be in Colorado.
Britain and Italy warned they would oppose any move to re fortify the demilitarized Rhineland Zone. Hitler faced international reproach as ambassadors from major powers planned to remain near Berlin awaiting his response.
April 19 Milwaukee report says Checker Return Ucket a 30 year old Eskimo who drives dog teams near the Santa Claus toy factory avoided jail after a tavern disturbance. Judge George Page suspended the sentence noting his trek back to Nome to help Santa. He said the Eskimo arrived at Christmas with a reindeer and dog team.
The Nome city council was sworn in at Nevada Hall with all members present except Balsiger. City Clerk M J Walsh and auditor reports covering five years ending 1935 were accepted. New committees were named and applications for Nome Five Der chief and crew were solicited with a five pm deadline Monday.
James B Brown pioneer trader of the Kuskokwim district and former Nome resident died after injuries from a log trampling in the fall. The article notes his life with Ames Mercantile Co and dog driving across Seward Peninsula, with continuing details on aging and a long public record.
Senator Schwellenbach says colonization of the Matanuska Valley will use the army transport St Mihiel stationed in San Francisco. Wilson Alaska Steamship president, and Pan American rep Mc Donald. The group plans a polar bear hunt around Point Barrow for the next week or ten days and may return via Nome.
