President Roosevelt signed the War Department appropriation bill noting it funds an army increase to peace time strength. The measure provides about four hundred million dollars for the fiscal year starting July 1, marking one of the largest peacetime Army allocations.
President Roosevelt met late with House Speaker Burns and Ways and Means Chairman Doughton to press for prompt enactment of the broad social security program. He had earlier conferred with Senate leaders Robinson on Capitol Hill matters, returning to Washington with his legislative push in focus.
Labor census registration in Nome opened at 9 AM and ran until noon then resumed 1 PM to 5 PM at the Alaska Road Commission building with evening hours 7 to 9 PM at the Fire Department. E F Serber urged all workers to register to help compile an accurate count and avoid labor surpluses for Nome this summer.
Al Carey, operator on Dahl Creek in Kangarok, Nome, returns by air and plans to start summer mining soon with men and equipment. Emil Laurin of Laurin Bros sees favorable snow for water and expects to send five to six men up the Kangarok to begin spring work ahead of a strong season. Victor Laurin to join from Seattle early boats. supplies to be carried in.
A month-old Pacific coast tanker strike remains unsettled as oil companies and maritime unions resume broadside clashes. Twenty four maritime unions urged President Roosevelt to act to avert a broader industrial tieup, while companies claim partial truth in bargaining accusations. A mediator will be sent and strikers are to return to previous positions.
Jury in United States versus Max Gottschilk fails to reach verdict after overnight deliberations and the case is continued to the 1926 term. Motions push T A Macalone and Ulegak matters to later hearings with government filings extended to Monday evening. Will contest hearing for Louisa M Blomberg postponed to Monday April 22 as court calendars clear.
Snow shoveling marks start of work on the Nome Drug Store site west of Cavey Restaurant. The former North Pole Bakery building was moved by Nome Motor Company caterpillar to Front Street for remodeling. Arthur W. Brown of Nome receives FHA architect appointment in Washington for a pilot project on the new Nome building.
Pilot Frank Whaley of Rost Airways returns from Tanana with Herb Myers A D Soaper and Tony Rolando as passengers. He will sail tomorrow morning for Shelton with supplies and men for the Laurin mining property, then proceed to Nome Candle and Deering in the afternoon.
Barney Ross defended his junior welterweight title in Seattle's civic auditorium, defeating Henry Wood of Yakima over twelve rounds. Ross fought with a sore right leg after a third-round knockdown, weighing 182.5 pounds to Woods's 187.25 pounds.
In Sacramento on April 10 the revenue committee of the California Assembly rejected a proposal to levy a new film tax, defeating the measure amid debate. Assemblyman Voight of Los Angeles urged moving on from Mayer and Metro-Goldwyn to avoid fiscal ruin.
Pilot Chester Brown of Northern Air Transport flew non stop from Kotzebue to Barrow with W Brower and son carrying fresh goods. He reported Barrow residents healthy and had gas up before continuing to Nome. Flight times were four hours thirty minutes Kotzebue to Barrow and three hours fifteen minutes back.
In Berlin on April 10 Sammy Epstein and Hans Swigler were executed by beheading at Plönensee prison for the death of Horst Wessel the Nazi balladeer. The executioner wore formal attire as a 67 year old man carried out the sentence. Six communists received prison terms up to six years. Epstein noted as the first Jew to be beheaded in German history.
Pacific Alaska Airways pilot Jerry Jones returned to Nome with mining drill machinery for Bartholomae mining near Teller. The Vallat party including Harry Little and Fred Zech travels from Fairbanks to Teller to prepare operations for the coming summer. Jones planned to fly back to Fairbanks the next morning, weather permitting.
The regular Polarite meet ing at the home of Mr and Mrs Frank Whal ly has been postponed for this evening. Another meeting will likely be held next week instead of this Wednesday according to the club president.
Public dance scheduled tonight from 10 PM to 1 AM at Nevada Hall with adults admitted for 50 cents.
